Zootopia, the beloved computer-animated movie from Disney, made its way to the silver screen several years ago and was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from both moviegoers and critics. The film captured the hearts of many and went on to receive numerous accolades, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Critics Choice Award. It also achieved tremendous commercial success, ranking as the fourth-highest-grossing film in 2016. This time around, we might find ourselves visiting the bustling city once more – Zootopia 2 is confirmed and we’re just excited about it.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has officially confirmed that a sequel to Zootopia is currently in the works. The announcement was made during a Q1 earnings call on February 8, as reported by IGN. Iger promised an exciting future for Disney and Pixar’s animated films, revealing plans for Frozen III and Toy Story 5 in addition to Zootopia 2. While specific details about these projects have not yet been revealed, fans can take comfort in the knowledge that Zootopia 2 is confirmed and is definitely happening.
Prior to Bob Iger’s confirmation, the possibility of a Zootopia sequel was very much up in the air. There was a significant gap between the film’s initial release and Disney’s announcement of a sequel. However, rumors about a potential sequel started circulating almost immediately after the first movie hit theaters. The film’s directors had expressed early interest in exploring more of the Zootopia universe. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zootopia director Bryon Howard shared the following sentiment:
I think we all loved the world so much and got so attached to the characters, that we actually got a little sad when the film finally came out [because] we felt like, ‘Well, we’re kind of done with it.’ And it’s nice that there’s this potential for it to get bigger.â€
For a number of years, there were persistent rumors that a sequel to Zootopia was in the works, with some even speculating about a tentative release date. However, despite the buzz, there was no official confirmation or production schedule for the project. Consequently, discussions about Zootopia 2 remained entirely speculative until Disney finally announced the sequel almost seven years after the release of the first movie.
