With just a few weeks away from hitting the big screens, Marvel fans have high expectations for the movie that will launch and set the tone for Phase 3 of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. It has been a long road for MCU, with 12 movies in a span of no less than 8 years. Now that ‘Captain America: Civil War’ is about to be officially launched, it carries with it the promise of being a game changer that will set the course of MCU’s Phase 3. It’s sort of a make or break moment for Disney and Marvel’s latest collaboration.

Captain America: Civil War finds the Avengers facing their toughest foes yet: that is, each other. Forced to take sides on the issue of Superhero Registration, the Avengers were split into half with one led by Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man (#TeamIronMan), and the other by Chris Evan’s Captain America (#TeamCap). Under the co-direction of brothers Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: Winter Soldier), the latest Marvel offering sees the Avengers back on screen together with some other Marvel characters debuting. We’ll see Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) making a comeback and taking sides with his former nemesis. Also returning are  Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and practically the rest of the Avengers team less Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) who are out their either chasing their own fill of bad guys, or on a reflective journey after being rattled by the fundamental questions thrown to them by Ultron. Well, we really don’t know.

Anyways, Avenger co-star Anthony Mackie, who played the role of the Falcon in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man shared his glowing remarks and high praise for Civil War in his recent interview with IGN. Mackie, who at that time was promoting his latest action-suspense movie ‘Triple 9’, revealed little about the details in Civil War, but was generous with his compliments to the leadership and direction of the Russo brothers. Mackie says,

“It’ll be very different because… I feel the best Marvel movies thus far have been Winter Soldier and Iron Man. And I think this movie far surpasses those two movies. I think the Russo brothers and Marvel have done a very good job with upping the ante every movie. And this one definitely does not fail to live up to that.”

It is expected from the Russos, and rightfully so. As ScreenRant’s James Roberts pointed out, “It’s true that the Russos and Marvel have never been shy about taking things to the next level with each successive release – and with so much at stake in Civil War, hearing this can be nothing but good news for fans that’ve followed the MCU franchise for the last 8 years.”

Most fans noted that Civil War seems to be jam packed with a plethora of Marvel characters, calling it even as “Avengers 2.5”. As if this is not enough, the movie will feature two additional characters: Spiderman (Tom Holland) and making his debut in the MCU, the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). We’ll just have to see how the movie will stay true to its purpose of being the harbinger of MCU’s Phase 3 without losing itself in the central narrative.

“Indeed, the stakes are pretty high for Civil War, as the outcome will have an effect on the rest of the MCU for the next few years in the lead up to Avengers: Infinity War,” says Roberts. “No matter what happens, Civil War will be regarded as a tone setter for the coming phase, with the next films building on its momentum.”

Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” hits screens on May 6, 2016, while Triple 9 will be released in the UK on Friday, February 19, 2016.
