It has been said that the billion-dollar success of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ may be credited to the marketing leverage offered by one of its prominent events dubbed as ‘Force Friday’. Debuted three months before the theatrical release of the 7th instalment of the Star Wars saga, Force Friday saw and enjoyed huge sales from its line up of Star Wars themed merchandise. Ranging from toys, books, apparel and anything that you can put on a shelf, the concept created enough momentum to propel the movie to where it is now today.
Now that the official news is out of another offering from Disney and Lucasfilm – a spin-off slated to be released during the holidays, specifically on December 16 of this year – ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ will be kicked off by a reboot of yet another ‘Force Friday’ offering scheduled on September 30, 2016.
It’s quite speculative at first, somewhat like a déjà vu thing. However, thanks to a piece of juicy info from JediNews Live via Star Wars Underworld, it seems that the plan is already in the works. Here’s what JediNews has to say:
Though the tweet did not mention any details about the three licensees that will take part on Force Friday, nor the merchandise that will be featured, the [unofficial] announcement has an air of authority with it considering that the said licensees mentioned the same date as claimed by JediNews. We can only speculate that those who have joined last year’s event may likewise share a re-run with Rogue One. Several toy companies have given a sneak peek of what they will offer in line with the Star Wars spin-off. One example is LEGO’s take on a possible set accompanying Rogue One that was ‘unintentionally’ revealed during the recent International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany. The image projected on stage hinted at what seems to be the classic Slave I ship of Boba Fett. Check out the image below.
Nevertheless, we hope that toy manufacturers will have a better pulse on what toy aficionados and fans are expecting. It is but wise to learn from the clamor created by the #WheresRey controversy weeks ago. For sure, Disney and Lucasfilm will be at the helm of Force Friday knowing that last year’s stint was a huge success. With the official trailer coming out sometime in May together with the debut of ‘Captain America: Civil War’, Rogue One will get all the leverage that it needs prior to its next Force Friday offering. Now that Darth Vader’s persona is also confirmed to make another appearance in Rogue One, we can expect a handful of merchandise from the infamous Sith Lord.
Star Wars: Episode 7 – The Force Awakens is now in theaters, and will be followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode 8 on December 15th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode 9 is expected to reach theaters in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
