The gods of Asgard waged and won a battle against the Dark Elves in antiquity. Aether, the survivors’ ultimate weapon, was buried in a secure location once it was neutralized. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) finds the Aether and becomes its host, compelling Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to transport her to Asgard before Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) captures her and uses the weapon to destroy the Nine Realms (including Earth).
