Disney’s reimagining of the beloved 1976 classic Freaky Friday featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan is celebrating its 20th anniversary since its release. The 2003 Freaky Friday version revolves around the tumultuous relationship between Tess and her daughter, Anna, who struggle to get along. However, things take a sudden turn when they unexpectedly swap bodies, leading them to experience each other’s lives firsthand. Fast forward to the present, and we’ve seen some recent updates that suggest a new Freaky Friday sequel could be in the works. Jamie Lee Curtis took to social media earlier this month, posting a photo of herself and Lindsay Lohan with a caption that reads, “It’s Friday. I’m just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed!” Lohan later commented on the post with cryptic emojis hinting that she shares the same sentiment as that of Curtis.
But the biggest update came from Jamie Lee Curtis herself during the recent Producers Guild Awards. When asked about the possibility of a new film, Curtis hinted, “It’s going to happen. Without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you at this moment and saying, ‘Of course, it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”
While it’s possible that the actors are simply stoking social media buzz, it’s exciting to think about what a new “Freaky Friday” film could bring to the table. Moving the focus away from a teenage daughter and her mother and onto the struggles of growing older could be a unique angle for adults to appreciate.
It’s worth noting that Disney has already revisited the Freaky Friday franchise, releasing a new film on the Disney Channel in 2018. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite pack the same punch as the original with Curtis and Lohan. Nonetheless, fans of the classic are eagerly awaiting any new updates on the rumored Freaky Friday sequel.
