Rian Johnson has already chimed in on the matter of the dissonance between critics and audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes regarding Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s an open secret now, after all, that there’s a sharp divide between box office returns and the reactions by fans with disproved theories.
Now, another filmmaker is throwing his own two cents in on the merits of The Last Jedi. It’s none other than Ron Howard, veteran director who also happens to be on the hot seat for Solo: A Star Wars Story. He’s just watched the movie recently and quite liked it.
But don’t take our word for it. Howard himself took to social media to express his positive mini-review, and he accompanied his Twitter post with a selfie of himself at the cinema where he and his family caught The Last Jedi. In his words, their fellow audience “cheered and applauded.”

Johnson may have been given the keys by Disney to cook up ideas for an entirely new Star Wars trilogy in the future, but even he’s concerned by some of the bile coming up for Last Jedi from “hardcore” fans. The appreciation in his reply to Howard’s tweet is palpable.
Thanks Ron!! ❤️❤️

The crux of the negative backlash against The Last Jedi has always been how the film addressed some of the mysteries brought up from The Force Awakens. Some longtime fans hated how Rey’s parents were revealed as “nobodies,” or how little was known about Supreme Leader Snoke before his death.
It’s gotten to the point that now an online petition has been started to demand that the eighth Star Wars movie be removed from official canon by Lucasfilm. Already that petition on Change.org has reached beyond 29,000 signatories (with near regular refreshes), getting close to the next milestone of 35,000.
Meanwhile, Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story is due to come out in May of 2018. The film stars Alden Ehernreich as the young Han Solo, Donald Glover as the young Lando Calrissian, Joonas Suotamo as the young Chewbacca, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame.
