Disney ushered in their first live-action remake for this year with last Friday debut of The Jungle Book with an estimated weekend haul of $103.6 million. The magic is indeed alive in Disney’s live-action division with a handful of remakes and sequels on the way that certainly shows how Disney can turn a classic animated film into a highly grossing blockbuster film once turned into actual live renditions.
In spite of many iterations and spin-off origins that were met with mixed reactions from audiences, Disney has taken on the challenge of re-launching another fairy tale based on J.M. Barrie’s The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. For this project, Disney once again recruited the talent of Director David Lowery to bring us back once more to that magical place of Neverland, with Disney’s live action remake of Peter Pan. Disney is definitely impressed with Lowery’s rendition of another classic, Pete’s Dragon – which opens in theaters on August 16 – that they see it fit to put him in charge once again for this ambitious project.
This may come as a breather for fans of this beloved Disney classic, amidst other not-so-lucrative renditions and back story origins such as 1991’s Hook directed by Steven Spielberg, and the more recent, highly criticized and pricey Warner Bros. Pan.
Disney may prove to be the right choice for this retelling of a J.M. Barrie classic given the success of Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and just recently Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. Disney’s live-action remakes have been highly successful so much so that it virtually spawned a separate department within the Mouse House run by Disney Pictures President Sean Bailey. Moving forward, Bailey and his team have already announced other remakes on the works such as Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson as Belle and directed by Bill Condon, the Tim Burton-directed Dumbo, Mulan, and Angelina Jolie in Maleficent 2. Another live action remake to watch out for before we see Peter Pan is one of Disney’s most famous fairies. Tink – A Tinker Bell Story will cast Reese Witherspoon in the main role.
There has been no definite date of release for Peter Pan, but with Disney taking over in retelling this classic children’s tale that generations have learned to love, it is definitely worth the wait.
