‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Release Date Pushed Back

Now before you start freaking out at the title, it’s not that far. Rather than opening on May 26, 2017, Disney and Lucasfilm recently decided to release the eighth installment of Star Wars on December 15, 2017. Yes, that’s a seven month window of anticipation and impatience, but if it follows the model of Star Wars: The Force Awakens it will be a genius move for Disney. The seventh film is on its way to becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all-time, and just think about the buildup in store for the next episode. In it’s place, Disney is shifting Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales up to the vacant May 26, 2017 slot.

Episode VIII will feature a new director, Rian Johnson, but based on comments from the most recent head of the franchise, J.J. Abrams, we’re in store for a treat, as he said, to paraphrase, now that he knows where the story is going he wishes he was in charge still! And have no fear, there will be plenty of Disney and Star Wars to go around in the mean time. The summer of 2017 will bring us Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5 and Cars 3 six weeks later on June 16. Oh, and then there’s the next Star Wars movie slated for release December 16, 2016, Star Wars: Rogue One, a stand alone film that takes place prior to the start of the franchise. Whew…it’s a good time to be a Disney fan!
