At a time where teen romantic musical and comedies usually received high eyebrow responses, the 2006 Disney Channel Original Movie “High School Musical” dared to go against the flow and broke the stereotypical mould that later defined a generation of kids, tweens and even parents.
Disney Channel pays tribute to the original cast by reuniting them for the 10th anniversary of the original movie classic. Stars Vanessa Hudgens, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, Ashley Tisdale and Monique Coleman all got together to film nostalgic segments that will air on Wednesday, Jan. 20 during a special rebroadcast of the film. Zac Efron wasn’t able to make it due to scheduling conflicts but filmed a special pre-recorded message for fans. The cast shares some of their favorite memories and what it means to them to be part of this legacy. Fans will be treated with some fun HSM trivia to share with their friends.
“Seeing the cast of High School Musical back together again reaffirms what made it special 10 years ago. It’s their optimism, their dedication and their extraordinary talent — as a group — that made this such an exceptional movie and cultural phenomenon,” Disney Channel President Gary Marsh said in a statement. “Ten years later, the movie continues to delight audiences around the globe, not just for its memorable song and dance numbers, but for its universal themes that continue to resonate with fans everywhere — express yourself, believe in yourself and always follow your dreams.”
High School Musical became the highest-rated broadcast ever for the Disney Channel when it premiered a decade ago. It became a worldwide phenomenon, reaching 100 million unduplicated viewers around the world by the end of the year. The soundtrack – which featured fan-favorites like “Breaking Free,” “Bop to the Top” and “We’re All in This Together” – became the best selling album of 2006. It was followed by High School Musical 2 in 2007, and the feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year released on 2008.
Subsequent rebroadcasts of the movie and its sequel, High School Musical 2, will be aired on Thursday, January 21 and Sunday, January 24 on the Disney Channel. For the mean time, check out this video interview with the cast.
