Disney’s last live-action movie of an animated classic for 2015, Cinderella, seemed to have set the tone for similar adaptations to be lined up for the next few years. For this year, the celebrated movie company is set to release another live-action The Jungle Book, which will be followed soon by Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Mulan, and Cruella. The last three has no release dates yet, but it is clear that the Mouse House has set its eyes on Cruella. Slated to take the villainous role is Emma Stone, which was originally portrayed by Glenn Close in the 1996 big screen adaptation of the animated film 101 Dalmatians, and in its 2000 sequel 102 Dalmatians.

The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that early negotiations are set to have Emma Stone on board to portray the role of the fixated antagonist who will stop at nothing to reach her dream of donning the perfect Dalmatian-fur coat. Disney promised that their reimagining of Cruella will consist of a power house of screen writers including Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) and Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks, and 50 Shades of Grey) – now that is something.

Emma Stone will no doubt give justice to the role given her latest credits which include Birdman where she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Aloha, and the mystery drama Irrational Man. She will also be in the musical comedy-drama in La La Land co-starring with Ryan Gosling.

Adrienne Tyler of Screen Rant is optimistic that this new role will allow further opportunities for Stone. “Given the kinds of roles she is normally associated with, Cruella represents a potential new step in her career as the main character in what could be a lucrative franchise”, Tyler explains. “While Cruella doesn’t lend itself to the sort of fantastical world that Angelina Jolie inhabited in Maleficent, the recognizability of the character and, certainly, the studio behind de Vil’s previous incarnations, could mean the fur-loving dog-napper will be another box office success.”

At the moment, information on the possible history of Cruella de Vil’s character is nil. But rumor has it that the role of her leading lady is now in the works.
