How Will Marvel’s Dr. Strange Look On The Big Screen?

Here is another reason for Marvel fans to whet their appetites. Walt Disney and Marvel Studios have just released the official concept art for the next addition to their cinematic universe – “Doctor Strange” slated to be released on November 4, 2016. These ultra high resolution images include possible scenes in the Chamber of Relics and the Sanctum Sanctorum, as well as an image of Doctor Strange following his accident (captioned ‘Checkmate’) and a couple of images hinting Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role.

Sandy Schaefer of provides an overview on what to expect to this yet another puzzle in Marvel’s universe. “Directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange will be the first Marvel Studios film to explore the concepts of magic, mythicism, and sorcery within the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, when it arrives in Fall 2016. Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock fame is playing Stephen Vincent Strange – the brilliant if arrogant surgeon who becomes a practitioner of the magic arts after a life-changing accident – in the movie and much has already been made of not just his abilities, but also the magical artifacts that Strange keeps and employs (such as the Cloak of Levitation).” Let’s see if one of the Infinity Stones will be included in his inventory.

Meanwhile, it is becomes evident where the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is going as they delve deeper in the role of magic in its movie themes. The movie’s aesthetics and visual style is very reminiscent of the Thor movies – and this is expected since both in Phase I and II of the MCU, they have gone deeper and deeper into the roots of magic and fantasy. It should also be expected that Doctor Strange will somehow be darker as compared to the Thor movies. Having Derrickson on board will give it a taste of a bit of supernatural horror similar to that of the likes of Hellraiser: Inferno and Deliver Us from Evil. Well perhaps not too much. After all, it is also a Disney movie (tongue in cheek).

The cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch taking the lead role of Doctor Strange, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Michael Stuhlberge with Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton. Marvel’s Doctor Strange is produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee as executive producers.
