This is the first time that we’ve actually said it, but…THIS YEAR Star Wars returns to the big screen! Whew! What a rush to just type that, haha. And yes, it’s still a little ridiculous that while I write for Disney I get to include Star Wars. Thanks Disney. Preesh.
At the end of 2015 Star Wars: Episode VII will come to theaters, but the wait for the next Star Wars film won’t be very long apparently. Disney has plans to create spinoff, stand alone films within the Star Wars universe to introduce new characters, new worlds and keep the franchise perpetually fresh. And for the first one…Disney landed it’s writer!
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting (because that’s what they do I assume…) that Chris Weitz has joined the team for the film, which will be directed by Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. We still don’t know which direction this film will take or which character will be the primary protagonist, but Weitz previous works will certainly bring speculation as to the direction Disney may take. Other titles he’s written include: The Golden Compass, the upcoming live-action Cinderella, and The Twilight Saga—New Moon, all of which have female leads. We’ll just have to wait and see!
The plan, as of now, is that this movie will release December 2016, one year after Episode VII, which comes out December 21, 2015.
