Disney to Make Adaptation of ‘Artemis Fowl’

Teaming up with Harvey Weinstein and Robert DeNiro, Disney is developing the popular story of Artemis Fowl into a movie! The story follows a 12-year old criminal mastermind that sets out to preserve the family fortune. Irish author Eoin Colfer penned eight books in the series that highlights the title character, but it is not yet known if the plan is to fully develop the entire series. Typically the success of the maiden film determines future endeavors, but regardless, Disney is pairing together a power tandem in DeNiro and Weinstein to head this project.

Weinstein previously worked on titles with Disney, but experienced a sour breakup nearly a decade ago. Speaking on the film and the relationship with Disney, Weinstein stated:

“If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,” Weinstein, co-chairman of the Weinstein Company, said. “I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film…This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old.”

Artemis Fowl has sold over 21 million copies and is translated into 44 different languages. All of this sets up for one epic adventure for Disney to create in the coming years.
