As part of the Disney purchase of LucasFilm months ago, Disney acquired not only one of the strongest film franchises and studios in the business, but also all of the highly successful divisions that George Lucas created to carry the brand of Star Wars on. One of those primary brands was LucasArts, the video game division that created all of the playable Star Wars adventures. In a recent statement, though, Disney explained that they are shutting down the division:
After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.
This is huge news primarily due to the rumors of new games LucasArts was developing, namely ‘Star Wars 1313’. We aren’t sure how the rest of the Star Wars video games will develop or release, but this is big news for the business side of Disney. Make sure to come back for more news on this as it releases.
