The ‘Almost’ Toy Story

Buzz and Woody have grossed over $2 billion in the global box office for their three Toy Story movies. What if Toy Story was never Toy Story, though? Lee Unkrich, the editor of the original Toy Story and director of the third installment, recently gave some insight into the struggle Pixar faced in naming the franchise. Before the
original Toy Story was released, Pixar enlisted all of their employees to brainstorm names for the toy project. Through Unkrich’s personal Twitter page the public got a glimpse into some of the failed names. Of the over 200 plus names he shared here
are a few that stood out:

  • The New Toy
  • Made In Taiwan
  • Moving Buddies
  • To Infinity and Beyond
  • Wind-Up Heroes
  • The Cowboy & The Spaceman
  • Spurs & Rockets
  • Bring Me The Arm of Buzz Lightyear
  • Toyz in the Hood
  • Each Sold Separately
  • Rex’s First Movie
  • Wind the Frog
  • Wings & Pullstrings
  • Some Assembly Required
  • For the Love of Peep
  • The Favorite

“If you thought those were bad, there were hundreds of others,” Unkrich stated on his Twitter page. “None were better than plain old Toy Story, so that’s the title the world got.” And we are all oh, so thankful that ‘Made in Taiwan’ never came to fruition.

What about you? Which of these if your favorites? Have any other ideas of what Toy Story could have or should have been named? ‘Toyz in the Hood’, anyone? Just think about it…instead of Tom Hanks as Woody, it could have been Terry Crews!
