After becoming one of the most popular young actresses, Debby Ryan is now the star of her own show, Jessie! The new Disney Channel show premiered this past Friday night, September 30, 2011 with incredible ratings. Jessie became the highest-rated premiere for the Disney Channel since Debby Ryan’s previous gig, The Suite Life on Deck, debuted. Not to be outdone by her predecessor, though, Jessie set records among kids in the prime demographics.
Jessie is the story of an 18-year old girl from Texas who finds herself moving to New York. After being pushed out of her taxi, the out-of-place Jessie happens to meet a young girl that asks her to become her nanny. Not knowing what she’s getting into, Jessie agrees to nanny the four Ross children: Emma (Peyton R. List), Luke (Cameron Boyce), Ravi (Karan Brar) and Zuri (Skai Jackson). The children have one surprise in store for Jessie, though: they live in a multi-million dollar penthouse. Being nanny to the children becomes much more than she first anticipated, though, as each of the children has their own quirks, including an imaginary friend and pet lizard. Through her adventures, Jessie finds friends in the 20-year old doorman, Tony (Chris Galya), who secretly develops a crush on Jessie, and the overweight, yet lighthearted butler Bertram (Kevin Chamberlain). New York has many twists and turns for this girl from Texas, but the four Ross children may have even more.
Disney Channel believes they have a star in the young Debby Ryan; the ratings will only help boost this idea. While Ryan’s character was a bit younger than her actual age in The Suite Life on Deck, Ryan mentioned that she’s excited to play a role closer to her actual age. It’s a role that Ryan believes she’ll thrive in, but will also appeal to kids varying in age. Of the chance to finally play an older character, Ryan stated, “It hasn’t been addressed that this is who we are once we’re 18 and set loose upon the world and it’s exciting for me to be paving new ground with Jessie.”
If Debby Ryan, or even the ratings from the series premiere are any indication, Jessie will be bringing Disney Channel to New York City for a long time to come.
