With one “already successful” full length feature film under their belts, Disney seems to have the upper hand in a war to get a live action, updated version of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to the box office. But you should never underestimate the underdog.
As of now, The Walt Disney Studio has tentatively set their reworked version “Snow and the Seven” (working title) for a 2013 release date. Natalie Portman has been rumored to be playing the lead role which centers around a Brit who returns to Hong Kong to bury her father only to discover that her stepmother is plotting against her. She escapes to the mainland and enlists the help of seven monks. I don’t know if I can wrap my head around this interpretation just yet.
Relativity Media is working on a version of the fairy tale, “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White” which will star Julia Roberts at the Evil Queen. This more classic take on the iconic film is set to be released next year. However the dwarfs (Cha Cha, Teach, Grub, Half-Pint, Butcher, Julius and Stench) are far from classic. The film will also star Nathan Lane as well as Lily Collins (Snow White) and Armie Hammer (Prince).
And the third contender in this battle is Universal Pictures with “Snow White and the Huntsman”. Also set to be released in 2012, this version of Snow White puts a new spin on the tale when The Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who is ordered by the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron) to kill Snow White (Kristen Stewart) in the forest decides instead to train Snow White to lead the charge against the Queen. The film also stars Ian McShane as the head of the band of dwarfs.
Who will win? Only time will tell! Which version are you looking forward to most?
